i'm reminded of the author of Calvin and Hobbes... who refused to license Calvin apparrel, tshirts, mugs, decals, etc... all those Calvin peeing car decals are unlicensed. He thought Calvin and Hobbes was a comic strip, and that they wouldn't make sense out of that context.
