political cartoonsThese cartoons, drawn just prior to the last global war, are just as appropriate today as when they were first made... though less politically correct today. Terrorism and its state sponsors (such as Iran and Syria) and the forces behind the global Caliphate have replaced the Nazis. Pelosi and Carter and crew have replaced Chamberlain. Bush might be likened to Franklin D. Roosevelt in some ways. Who will replace Winston Churchill and Harry S Truman? Perhaps you'll be as surprised as I was to discover that the author of these cartoons was none other than dear Dr. Seuss.

I never knew he drew political cartoons! How fascinating.
Aah, you've got to love Dr. Seuss!
-.- there is nothing near the organization in terrorist groups that there was in Nazi Germany. There is nothing near the military machine. There is no one who is a powerful, charismatic leader. And I can't think of ANY way in which Bush is like Roosevelt except that they've both been president and I wouldn't be surprised if Bush tried to go over the term limit.
sorry. that was bugging me. I'd say the country's looking a little more like POST WWII. We could use, say, an Edward R. Murrow instead.

Mmm...interesting that LordCanti doesn't believe that terrorist leaders who inspire people enough to blow themselves up are "powerful, charismatic leaders." Also, do terrorists need a "military machine" to win? Look at what the U.S.'s military machine got us in Iraq.
Great post. Osama isn't charismatic enough for Lord Canti? Well, I never found him charismatic, but I would agree with Nick's comment about the ability to inspire suicide bombings. I feel fairly certain that Bush will not try to go over his term although I fear how the '08 winner will handle the war in Iraq and deal with Iran.
heh. Okay. I owe an apology - no more posting at 6:30 in the morning. What I meant was that there's really no unifying leader - there are a lot of factions, but not a single powerful leader. I think also that "winning" is subjective. The terrorists are very good at blowing themselves up and killing a lot of people. But I don't think they have the force to occupy a city or country, at least not in the traditional sense of warfare.

I agree with all of you... Islamic terrorism is not very 'centralized' (at least not yet), but it does have plenty of 'charismatic leaders'... and the war is not a "traditional" war, but rather "assymetric" (i.e. guerilla) and heavily focused on media, propaganda, and perceptions. Although, WWII had lots of media propaganda on both sides too...
Good cartoons Tim! Maybe Ben Franklin's "Join or Die" cartoon with the snake could be applied to Iraq itself.
It would be foolish for Islamic Fascists to use a centralized army like the Nazis did and failed. They are using a different strategy to which we need to adapt or trump.
